Why solar panels need to be regularly cleaned: Heavy infestation of lichens on Solar Panels Paignton, Devon.
Today we were in Paignton cleaning solar panels that were completely covered in large lichen growths.
The solar panels have never been cleaned since new (more than 10 years). We knew this was going to be a challenge to clean.
We turned our on board heating system up to maximum to give us the best chance to remove these lichens. Took two of us over 3 hours of hard work to remove all the lichens from the solar panels using high reach water fed poles and a specialist plastic solar panel scraper.
So why should solar panels be cleaned regularly?
On this occasion, even though we managed to fully remove the lichens from the solar panels, small marks remained on the solar panels where the lichens has bonded and damaged the surface of the solar panels.
Where they had been left for so long that damage is irreversible. With regular cleaning, the lichens would not had enough time to bond and damage the surface of the solar panels.
Even though these panels are permanently damaged by the lichens, it will only slightly make the panels less efficient and the cleaning we done today will make a huge difference.
